GAUGE: Each motif measures about 6 1/4 inches in diameter.

For single size spread about 74 x 108 inches, make 11 x 16 motifs; for double size spread about 94 x 108 inches, make 14 x 16 motifs.

First Motif: Ch 9, join with sl st to form ring. 1st round: (Ch 7, 4 sc in ring) 4 times. Do not join rnds.

2nd round: (Ch 7, 4 sc in next loop, sc in next 2 sc) 4 times.

3rd to 19th rounds including: (Ch 7, 4 sc in next loop, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc of this group, do not work in these last 2 sc) 4 times. There are 40 sc in each group on 19th rnd.

20th round: * Ch 7, sc in next loop, (ch 7, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc) 9 times. Repeat from * 3 more times (40 loops).

21st round: * Ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around.

22nd and 23rd rounds: * Ch 8, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ch 4, tr in 1st loop of 23rd rnd.

24th round: Ch 1, sc in tr, * in next loop make 4 tr, ch 3 and 4 tr, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join last tr with sl st in 1st sc.

25th round: * Ch 5, in next sp make tr, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook (p made), (tr, p) 3 times, and tr, ch 5, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join, fasten off.

Second motif: Work as for 1st Motif until 24th rnd is completed.

25th round: * Ch 5, in next sp make tr, p, (tr, ch 1, sc in corresponding p on 1st Motif, ch 1) twice, complete the picot on 2nd Motif; tr, p and tr, ch 5, sc in next sc. Repeat from * 2 more times (3 joinings). Complete rnd as for 1st Motif.

Make necessary number of motifs, joining to adjacent sides as 2nd Motif was joined to 1st, leaving 2 groups free between joinings.

Fill In Motif: Ch 8, join with sl st to form ring.

1st round: Ch 3 (to count as dc), 23 dc in ring. Join with sl st in 3rd st of ch-3.

2nd round: * Ch 13, sl st in 6th ch from hook, ch 5, skip 2 dc, sl st in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-5 with sl st in base of first ch-13.

3rd round: Sl st in 6 ch, sl st in large loop, ch 3, 12 dc in small loop, * 13 dc in next small loop. Repeat from * around. Join.

4th round: * Ch 8, sl st between center p's of group (before the joining) between motifs, ch 7, sl st in center dc of next shell, ch 13, sl st in next joining of motifs, ch 13, sl st in center dc of next shell, ch 7, sl st between p's of next free group, ch 8, sc between shells. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off. Fill in all sps between motifs in this manner.
